What Is The Golden Residency?

Not a Visa. A Permanent Home.

Bahrain's Golden Residency Programme is a permanent residency — granted by the Kingdom of Bahrain to qualified investors, professionals, retirees, and talented individuals. Unlike a work visa or a temporary permit, it has no expiry date and places no restriction on how long you stay.

You can travel freely, return at any time, sponsor your entire family, open bank accounts, own property, and build a business — all without needing a local sponsor, a local partner, or an employer to tie your residency to.

Melqart has been managing residency and company applications in Bahrain since 2013. We handle the full Golden Residency application process — from eligibility assessment to final approval — so you don't have to navigate the government portal alone.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Golden Residency — answered clearly and honestly. Still have a question? Contact Melqart directly.

Is the Golden Residency really permanent — or does it expire?
+
It is a permanent residency with no expiry date and no renewal requirement. There is also no minimum stay requirement — you can travel freely without losing your status. This is not a temporary visa or a time-limited permit.
Can I apply if I live outside Bahrain?
+
Yes. Non-residents can apply for services that don't require eKey login. Property owners in particular can apply from entirely outside Bahrain. Melqart manages the full application remotely — you do not need to travel to Bahrain to apply.
Can I hold multiple residencies in different countries?
+
Yes. Having other residencies or citizenships does not affect your eligibility for Bahrain's Golden Residency. Many applicants hold residency in the UAE, UK, or other countries simultaneously — this is fully permitted.
Does the Golden Residency allow me to work in Bahrain?
+
The Golden Residency allows you to reside in Bahrain and explore employment opportunities — however, a separate LMRA work permit is still required to be formally employed. Melqart can manage both your Golden Residency and LMRA work permit simultaneously.
What happens to my existing work visa when I get the Golden Residency?
+
Your existing work visa is not cancelled. You continue working under your current work permit until it expires, at which point it needs to be renewed through the normal LMRA process. The Golden Residency and your work permit operate independently.
Is there a minimum stay requirement to keep my residency?
+
No. There is no minimum stay requirement whatsoever. You can live in Bahrain full-time, part-time, or visit occasionally — your Golden Residency remains valid regardless of how much time you spend in the country.
Who can I include as a dependent on my Golden Residency?
+
You can sponsor your spouse, children, and parents. There is no age limit for dependents. Each dependent pays the same government fees as the main applicant — BHD 5 application fee and BHD 300 issuance fee (BHD 305 total per person).
How much does it cost in total?
+
The government fees are BHD 5 application fee plus BHD 300 residency issuance fee — BHD 305 total per person (approximately USD 810). The same fees apply to each dependent. Melqart charges a separate professional service fee, quoted clearly before you commit.
For property owners — does the BHD 130,000 refer to purchase price or current value?
+
The BHD 130,000 threshold is based on the purchase price of the property at the time of purchase — not the current market value. This can be a single property or combined shares across multiple properties, provided the total personal share value meets or exceeds BHD 130,000.
For professionals — does the BHD 2,000 salary include allowances?
+
No. Only the basic salary is counted. Bonuses, housing allowances, transport allowances, and any other additional benefits are specifically excluded from the calculation. The BHD 2,000 must be the basic salary figure, continuously SIO-insured for 5 full years.
Can self-employed people or entrepreneurs apply?
+
Yes — under the Talented Individuals category. Entrepreneurs who have successfully founded, scaled, or invested in businesses that drive economic growth are eligible. This category is subject to a specialist committee review with a 10-working-day processing time.
How do I check the status of my application?
+
You can check status through the Golden Residency portal on Bahrain.bh under "Requests and Golden Residencies Visa Management". Melqart tracks this on your behalf throughout the process and keeps you updated at every stage.
